The first model to be released was the Volvo 760. Available initially in a sedan configuration, it was noteworthy in design terms for its clean, square lines and a vertical rear window. The "powertrain" as it was known, was available with one of two 6-cylinder engines, the petrol injection with a V layout and a displacement of 2,849 cm3, and also a 6-cylinder in-line turbodiesel from 2,383 cm3. In 1985 the range expanded with the introduction of the station wagon version which was a notable commercial success in some European markets, in part due to its balance between comfort and versatility. Voor het eerst geïntroduceerd in 1982, werd het gekenmerkt door veel aandacht voor detail en een hoog afwerkingsniveau, in overeenstemming met de "premium" positionering die het nastreefde op zowel de Europese als de Amerikaanse markt. Het eerste model dat werd uitgebracht was de Volvo 760. Aanvankelijk verkrijgbaar in een sedanconfiguratie, was hij opmerkelijk in ontwerptermen vanwege zijn strakke, vierkante lijnen en een verticale achterruit. De "aandrijflijn" zoals die bekend stond, was leverbaar met een van de twee 6-cilinder motoren, de benzine-injectie met een V-indeling en een cilinderinhoud van 2.849 cm3, en ook een 6-cilinder turbodiesel in lijn vanaf 2.383 cm3. In 1985 breidde het assortiment zich uit met de introductie van de stationwagonversie, die een opmerkelijk commercieel succes was in sommige Europese markten, deels vanwege de balans tussen comfort en veelzijdigheid.
