At the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1975, the sporty version Golf GTI was introduced which incorporated the high performance 110 HP 1,600 cc engine. Het werd voor het eerst geïntroduceerd in het voorjaar van 1974 en werd meteen een zeer succesvol commercieel product. De eerste serie (1974-1983) bood toonaangevende technische mogelijkheden aan een zeer ontvankelijke consumentenmarkt uit die periode, waaronder een watergekoelde voormotor, voorwielaandrijving, solide en robuuste carrosserie met een functioneel maar even aantrekkelijk ontwerp. De hoge kwaliteit/prijsverhouding was echter het echte "concurrentievoordeel" dat de Golf zo succesvol maakte. Op de Frankfurt Motor Show in 1975 werd de sportieve versie Golf GTI geïntroduceerd die de krachtige 110 pk sterke 1.600 cc motor bevatte.
