Saleen is an American automobile manufacturer that is best known for producing high-performance sports cars, primarily based on Ford vehicles, but with significant modifications to enhance performance, design, and overall driving experience.

The company, founded by Steve Saleen in 1983, became famous for creating customized, limited-production cars with a focus on performance tuning, sleek styling, and advanced engineering. In the early years, Saleen focused on offering performance modifications for various Ford cars, particularly the Mustang. The company gained attention by offering specialized versions of the Mustang that included enhancements to the engine, suspension, brakes, and bodywork.

The S-281 was the first major production vehicle offered by Saleen. It was a modified version of the Ford Mustang that featured significant upgrades for engine performance, aerodynamics, and handling. This marked Saleen's entry into the world of performance-tuned street cars. In addition to its street cars, Saleen has a history in motorsport, particularly in sports car racing. The company participated in events like the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) and Trans-Am racing, developing cars specifically designed for competition.
