The brand is particularly notable for its involvement in motorsport, as well as its engineering excellence and contributions to the development of French automotive history. The company was initially founded as Lorraine in 1896 by Marius Dietrich and Emile Mors. The company was later renamed Lorraine-Dietrich after Dietrich's partner, Marius Dietrich, took sole ownership of the firm.

Lorraine-Dietrich's original focus was on manufacturing luxury cars and innovative engineering solutions. Early models were known for their reliability and solid craftsmanship, with the company quickly gaining a reputation for building robust, high-performance vehicles.

Lorraine-Dietrich was best known for creating luxury cars that embodied the spirit of the French automotive industry at the time. The company’s cars were sought after by aristocrats, high-profile figures, and wealthy individuals, as the brand established itself in the premium vehicle segment.

Lorraine-Dietrich gained international attention when one of its cars, driven by Louis Rigolly, won the Paris–Monte Carlo race in 1905, a highly prestigious event at the time.
