DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) is best known for producing the iconic DeLorean DMC-12, a car that has become a pop culture symbol due to its distinctive design and its role as a time machine in the Back to the Future film franchise.
Founded by John Z. DeLorean in 1975, the company produced cars in Northern Ireland during the early 1980s but struggled with financial difficulties and eventually went bankrupt in 1982. Despite its brief existence, the DeLorean DMC-12 remains a highly recognizable car, admired by collectors and enthusiasts today.
DeLorean Motor Company built the DMC-12 in a factory located in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The factory was established with government support, and production was meant to be a boost to the local economy. However, the factory faced significant production delays and cost overruns, which quickly strained the company's finances. The DeLorean DMC-12 was marketed as a luxury sports car aimed at well-heeled buyers. It was priced at around $25,000 when it first debuted, which was a high price for a car that didn’t offer the same level of performance as its competitors. As a result, sales were less than expected, and DeLorean’s financial troubles began to mount. DeLorean Motor Company was also revived under new ownership in 1995 with the goal of restoring and servicing the remaining DeLorean cars.
In 2016, there were even discussions about the possibility of producing a new version of the DeLorean DMC-12, though the company faced significant regulatory and financial hurdles in making such a venture a reality. Only around 9,000 DeLorean DMC-12s were produced, making it a rare collector's item today. The car's scarcity adds to its appeal among enthusiasts.
