Solex is a French brand best known for its motorized bicycles and scooters, which were very popular in the mid-20th century. The brand was especially recognized for producing the Solex motorized bicycle or moped, which became an iconic product for urban transportation.

Founded Solex was founded in 1905 by Marius Guillet and originally specialized in producing components for bicycles. The idea behind the Solex was to create a practical and affordable motorized bicycle that could offer an alternative to more expensive cars, especially for people living in cities or suburban areas.

These vehicles were relatively cheap, easy to maintain, and fuel-efficient. The Solex motorized bicycle was a two-wheeled vehicle with a small, efficient engine mounted on the front wheel. The motor assisted the rider in pedaling, providing additional speed and power when needed.

The most iconic model of the brand was the Solex 45, introduced in 1946. It was equipped with a 49cc engine, and the rider would pedal to engage the motor, which powered the front wheel. As the 1970s progressed, the rise of more powerful motorcycles and the increasing availability of cars led to a decline in the popularity of the motorized bicycle.

Eventually, in 1988, Solex was acquired by Motobécane, and the company stopped manufacturing the original motorized bicycles. However, the Solex brand has had periods of revival and interest, particularly among collectors and enthusiasts of vintage vehicles. It holds a special place in French automotive history and is still considered an iconic symbol of mid-century urban mobility.
