Saab is a Swedish automaker with a rich history of producing unique and innovative vehicles. Originally known for building aircraft, Saab transitioned into automobile manufacturing in the mid-20th century and gained a loyal following for its distinct designs, advanced technology, and commitment to safety. Though the company faced various challenges and ultimately ceased operations as an independent brand, Saab left behind a lasting legacy in the automotive world.

Founded in Saab was originally founded as Svenska Aeroplan AB (Swedish Aeroplane Company) in 1937 in Linköping, Sweden. The company initially focused on aircraft manufacturing, playing a significant role in Sweden's aviation industry.

In 1945, after World War II, Saab turned its attention to automobile production, recognizing the need for diversification. The first Saab car, the Saab 92, was introduced in 1949, marking the brand's entry into the automotive world. Saab’s approach to cars was heavily influenced by its aviation background, with a focus on aerodynamics, innovation, and safety.

Despite its innovative engineering and strong reputation for safety and performance, Saab faced financial difficulties in the 1990s and early 2000s. The company was acquired by General Motors (GM) in 1989, and while this brought some stability, Saab struggled to maintain its independence and brand identity within GM.

Saab’s parent company GM sold the brand to Spyker Cars. In 2012, Saab filed for bankruptcy, marking the end of its run as an independent car manufacturer.
