ZAZ is a Ukrainian car manufacturer, known for producing affordable cars primarily aimed at the domestic and Eastern European markets. The ZAZ (Zaporizhia Automobile Building Plant) was founded in 1960 in the city of Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, which was then part of the Soviet Union. The plant's primary goal was to manufacture affordable cars for the Soviet populace.
The early years of ZAZ were marked by partnerships with other automakers, including Fiat and Moskvitch. 1960s ZAZ began producing its first vehicle, the ZAZ-965, also known as the "Zaporozhets". It was a small, rear-engine, two-door car, designed to be a practical and affordable solution for Soviet citizens. The ZAZ-965 was based on the Fiat 600 but was manufactured in the Soviet Union to cater to the domestic market.
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, ZAZ continued to produce cars, although with a focus on the domestic market and neighboring countries.
