Renault is a French multinational automobile manufacturer that has had a significant and influential presence in both the automotive industry and motorsport world, particularly Formula 1.

Founded Renault was founded in 1899 by the Renault brothers — Louis, Marcel, and Fernand — in Boulogne-Billancourt, France. The company began by producing vehicles like cars and trucks and quickly established itself as a leader in early automotive design.

From the beginning, Renault focused on innovative technology and engineering. For example, they were pioneers in manufacturing the first car to include a direct drive system in 1905, and in the 1920s, Renault was one of the first companies to introduce mass production in France.

Renault underwent various ownership and management changes over the years. In 1945, after WWII, the company was nationalized by the French government and remained a state-owned entity until it was privatized again in 1996.

Renault has had an illustrious and influential career in motorsports, particularly in Formula 1. The company has contributed to the development of some of the most successful teams and drivers in the sport's history. Renault’s involvement in Formula 1 has been one of the most significant chapters of the brand’s motorsport history, as both a constructor and an engine supplier.

Renault also has a rich history in endurance racing, notably with its involvement in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and other sports car racing series. Renault achieved success in the Renault Alpine brand, winning the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1978 with the Alpine A442.
