Opel is a German automobile manufacturer that has been a significant player in the global automotive industry for over a century. Known for producing a wide range of vehicles—from affordable family cars to innovative electric models—Opel has become one of the most recognized brands in Europe and around the world. The company’s legacy is marked by engineering excellence, design innovation, and a commitment to technology.

Founded: Opel was established in 1862 by Adam Opel in Rüsselsheim, Germany. Initially, the company started as a sewing machine manufacturer, but by 1899, Opel entered the automobile industry by producing its first car, the Opel Patent-Motorwagen. Opel’s first automobile, the Opel Patent-Motorwagen, was powered by a single-cylinder engine and marked the company’s entry into the automobile market. The car was built with the same engineering quality that would define Opel vehicles for years to come.

In 1929, Opel became a part of the General Motors (GM) family. This partnership helped Opel expand its reach globally and access GM’s resources and technologies. Throughout the 20th century, Opel produced a variety of vehicles for both the European and global markets under the GM umbrella.

In 2017, General Motors sold Opel to PSA Group (now part of Stellantis). This marked a new chapter for the brand, as it began to operate more independently while still benefiting from shared resources with other PSA Group brands like Peugeot and Citroën.

Today, as part of Stellantis, Opel continues to produce a range of popular models, from compact cars like the Corsa and Astra to SUVs like the Mokka and Grandland X, all while embracing the future with a growing lineup of electric vehicles.
